Food often is the starting point for a conversation: about ingredients, a cuisine, the chef, or about memories. I like to participate in these conversations with whoever sits across the table, and turn them into stories. It's my job and it's what I love doing every day. I tell these stories with my camera and (or) my pen. In other words, my work goes beyond the plate.
As a former journalist, I was trained to both listen, see, and observe. When I started working as a food photographer and writer, I added one important skill: to interact. And what better way to do this than over a delicious meal. The kind that is prepared with lots of love.
I have lived in the US, spent my (post) university days in Groningen & Utrecht, travel often, and currently live in Hilversum - a village near Amsterdam. In my life, I've seen that food brings people together. It goes beyond cultures and countries, yet at the same time, is a big part of national traditions and customs. The beautiful thing about food stories is that they are told in a language we all understand. The language of passion, hard work, and satisfaction. Food is unconditional and indispensable. And I think we should be talking even more about it.
Dutch is my native tongue, however, because of my bachelor's degree in American Studies, I also enjoy writing in English.
My photography has a nordic and editorial feel to it, yet is at the same time warm and lively. I also develop and style recipes, and am currently writing my first cookbook: Van haver tot gort, a collection of modern, classic, and worldly porridge recipes.
